A local campaign has just begun to create one education system for all our schools in Northern Ireland.

The "One School of Thought" campaign launched on 7th September, and the organisers are saying that we need to change our education system to create better outcomes for all our children.

They want one education system for all children - which would mean ending the current segregated system with Catholic 'Maintained' schools and largely Protestant 'Controlled' schools.  In the meantime they ask for more sharing between schools, to reduce waste and build better community relations.

Both the First Minister, Peter Robinson MLA and the current Education Minister, John O'Dowd, MLA, agree that it is not good to segregate children in our education system, but neither so far has come up with specific plans for changing it.

The campaign argues that we need to start now, and calls on the Assembly to establish a Commission within this Assembly term, to come up with recommendations for reforming the system so that all children "learn and are taught together in their local area".

The campaign was launched with support from 75 'key signatories' - including a range of organisations, but also individuals such as comedians Jake O'Kane and Tim McGarry, celebrities such as Joanna Lumley and Eamonn Holmes, and sports personality Trevor Ringland.

At WIMPS - one of our key campaign areas is around the building of a more shared society.  Education and housing are key areas where our society is divided - as well as very evident divisions - such as the so-called 'Peace Lines' that separate areas in Belfast and beyond it.  So what do you think of this campaign?  Is it a good idea?  Do you think we should give it our support?  Would you like to see a public debate or campaign for young people on this issue?
