Why do we need to seperate national football teams for a such a small island. Do we need to see who is catholic and who is protestant, who is nationalist and who is unionist, I dont need a reminder of division in society, a society that could do with a break from it all. Like rugby and cricket I would like to see an all island, national football team.

Hi there,I have been in contact with FIFA on certain rulings and trying to find out if one team for the island of Ireland can exist and who decides this. I was wondering if you could help me also, I support Northern Ireland national football team and I also support Republic of Ireland national football team. How would an amalgamation of both teams take place, who would make the decision in making an "All Ireland" or "Ireland" national football team, i.e an independent body, a group of directors between IFA & FAI, the fans, both respective governments etc? And also how would I proceed in finding if it is a viable option for all and not for some.I am aware of certain circumstances which surround this topic, and any help you could provide would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.Best regardsKevin

Posted by Kev on 2011-11-22 12:11:42 I was watching the carling cup between scotland, wales, NI and ROI, and england pulled out. And by far ROI were the best team, hands down they dominated with attacking and defesnce, ball control and composure. Now if you watched the game were ROI beat NI 5 - 0 (I think), and thats with players from both sides of the boarder on the ROI team then that shows an inclusive team with a pool of talent. More and more players are opting to change to the ROI team because of better oppourtunites and if both sides of the boarder are playing for one team, then why not make it official? Can 2 cultural identities not exist within one small island and share a football team?
Posted by Kev on 2011-11-22 12:09:44 Maybe we are talking about the same thing but from a different angle. I agree with what you say about stereotyping - I hate that too. But is sport as much about a cultural inheritance? But lets leave that aside for now. If there was an all Ireland team, how strong do you think they would be? How would they fair against the other 'home' teams for example?
Posted by AlanBest on 2011-11-16 16:34:38 I dont think you understand, catholic and protestant alike support both teams, but its the controversy surrounding the teams, one side will say if you support NI then your protestant/unionist, and the other will say if you support ROI the your catholic/nationist. I cant stand that type of stereotype myself. But with all football teams you will have the small minority that will without fail everytime control crowd mentality and this will never change, but if we introduce an all island team, we take control from them. Lets not forget a national team is there for the population to stand shoulder to shoulder, not to show division, and to remove a 'them and us' stereotype.
Posted by Kev on 2011-11-16 16:09:38 Kev - as a supporter of GWA (the Green and Whilte Army) and the Northern Ireland football team I can't agree with you. I don't think it's about who is a catholic and who is a protestant, it's about who you want to support. I support man City but i don't live in Manchester. Yes it's weird that there are other national teams in sport, but a NI football team is what gets my support.
