College Square North‘s first Gig Night of 2012 was the biggest and best yet with 13 acts from across Northern Ireland and over 120 young people in the audience.

Photographer: Mark Mullan

Acts travelled from Portstewart, Crumlin and all over greater Belfast to showcase their talent.

The line up included Chloe Magee and Chris Mohan, Due South, The Blips, Caitlin Jamison, The Occurrence, Basic Translation, Peter Phillips, Casper’s Friend, Retired Flag, Sarah Patterson, Urban Avenue, VX and My Rebellion.

It is safe to say Northern Ireland has a vast amount of up and coming talented musicians. All the music artists were aged between 13 to 22 years and all had the own sound and style.

Nearly all acts performed at least 1 original song showing great writing skills.

BELFAST ‘S MUSIC HISTORY

It is timely to think in the 1960’s, the Maritime Hotel, which was located on College Square North was celebrated and renowned for nurturing the world class talents of Van Morrison, the lead singer with Them. There his early iconic songs such as Gloria and Mystic Eyes were given their first airings, often at improvised length with their punchy style whipping the dancing crowd to a buzzing frenzy. It was during one of these performances that the Decca Records scout decided to sign the band up paving the way for Them to score several top ten hits, including Baby Please Don't Go and Here comes the Night, before Morrison departed to launch his own outstanding international career as a best-selling album artist and concert performer.

In no time, the Maritime, as it was more widely called, had earned a reputation on a par with the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool. Hopefully our Gig Nights can find future world famous music artists.
The next event is the Belfast heat of the Irish Youth Music Awards 2012.

Invites any young music artist/s aged 12-19 years to enter The Irish Youth Music Awards 2012.
