My little black dress does not mean yes!
"Women should avoid dressing like sluts". Those were the words from a Toronto Police officer that started a women’s rights movement.
The police officer was offering his "advice" on how women could avoid getting raped. His remarks were met with outrage and the "Slutwalk" was born.
A Slutwalk is a march where participants wear "slutty" clothes and carry placards with messages like "Are any of us asking for it?” “Rapists Rape People not Outfits” “My Little Black Dress does not mean Yes" and "My outfit is not an invitation".
Ireland's first Slutwalk will take place in Galway on October 5th and is part of NUI Galway's Equality Week.
Slutwalk event pages are usually accompanied with the tag line, "Society teaches 'Don't get Raped' rather than 'Don't Rape'.
The organizers of the Galway event have added, 'The Slutwalk was born to illustrate that a woman's dress should in no way provoke unwanted sexual attacks, name calling or any other form of negative attention'.
Rape Crisis Network Ireland has endorsed the event.
What do you think? Would you support a slutwalk?
