It has become apparent that an increasing number of people of all generations are using earphones for iPods and other mp3 and mp4 players.

The main reason why people would use earphones would be to listen to music but self help guides and audio books have also come become more popular for people to listen to on the go.

Listening to earphones can sometimes imply being anti-social, blocking out the rest of the world.  In a survey of 6.2 million of people all over the world 4.4 million owned an iPod or OTHER music player. Also 1 in 5 people under the 30 own an IPod. Scientists have found that an hour’s iPod usage a day for five years might have a bad effect on as many as 1 in 10 listeners’ hearing. What does this mean for teens that frequently use iPods at the highest volume?

Other dangers from using headphones on high volume come from traffic accidents.  If you’re listening to music, you could potentially get knocked down if you don’t pay attention, or kill someone with your car if you are busy playing with your music player. In the space of 3 days 613 pedestrians were given penalty notices and fines in the state of Victoria, in Austrailia.   In 2008 there were 59 fatalities and 41 the previous year.

Do you use an iPod or other personal music player?
How you feel about the statistics?
Would you stop using personal music players?
